PVCICS Middle School Students Win Second Place in Whitaker-Bement Girls in Math Competition

February 23, 2026 - The Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School (PVCICS) middle school team won second place in the Whitaker-Bement Girls in Math Competition (WBGMC) held in January 2026.

The WBGMC team consisted middle school students in grades 6 through 8, who met after school with a faculty advisor throughout the school year to challenge themselves with math problems not seen in regular classes.  “We’re really proud of our middle school girls for earning this win and showing others their math skills.” said Kathleen Wang, Principal, “we are very excited this team continues the success in math that we’ve seen in the past.”

PVCICS is a tuition-free regional public charter school located in Hadley, Massachusetts, which enrolls 590 K-12th grade students from over 30 communities in the Pioneer Valley. PVCICS prepares students for academic and personal success through rigorous study in English and Mandarin Chinese. The school's goal is to graduate students with excellent scholarship, high proficiency in Mandarin Chinese and English, and sensitivity to multiple cultures. PVCICS is an International Baccalaureate World School offering the IB Diploma Programme.

The first Whitaker-Bement Girls in Mathematics Competition occurred in 2020 and has since grown. The WBGMC organizer’s vision is to bring together girls for a day of fun, centered around mathematics, empowerment, and growing a strong female-centric mathematics community.
