PVCICS Middle School Students Win Second Place in MathCounts Chapter Competition

February 23, 2026 - The Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School (PVCICS) middle school team won second place in the MathCounts Chapter Competition (WBGMC) held on February 7, 2026.

The MathCounts team consisted middle school students in grades 6 through 8, who work with a middle school math faculty advisor throughout the school year on math problems that encourage students to think beyond what they may see in the classroom.  They work collaborative as a team and can compete together and individually.  “Our middle school math program is exceptional and this team demonstrated their math skills against other public and private schools.” said Kathleen Wang, Principal.

PVCICS is a tuition-free regional public charter school located in Hadley, Massachusetts, which enrolls 590 K-12th grade students from over 30 communities in the Pioneer Valley. PVCICS prepares students for academic and personal success through rigorous study in English and Mandarin Chinese. The school's goal is to graduate students with excellent scholarship, high proficiency in Mandarin Chinese and English, and sensitivity to multiple cultures. PVCICS is an International Baccalaureate World School offering the IB Diploma Programme.

The first Whitaker-Bement Girls in Mathematics Competition occurred in 2020 and has since grown. The WBGMC organizer’s vision is to bring together girls for a day of fun, centered around mathematics, empowerment, and growing a strong female-centric mathematics community.
